On April 28th, 2019, I will be participating in my 14th marathon, The Virgin Money London Marathon, but this time I won't be running on my own, I will be a part of the Run for Autism Team.  The London Marathon annually raises over $80mm for charity, supporting hundreds of great causes in the UK and abroad.  Over 75% of runners individually support a charitable cause through their race making the London Marathon a Guinness world record breaker as the largest single annual fundraising event in the world.  I have therefore decided that, for the first time, I will give back by using the sport that has given me so much over the last decade.

Run for Autism raises money for the Organization for Autism Research (OAR).  OAR is a US based organization, dedicated to using science to address the social, educational, and treatment concerns of self-advocates, parents, autism professionals, and caregivers.  In addition to funding research grants, OAR provides much needed resources to kids and their families.  This includes not only scholarships and grants but resources for individuals to self-advocate and eventually find employment.

Here are the ways that OAR uses the funds raised by the RUN FOR AUTISM team:

• $10 provides a Curriculum in a Box professional development set to general education teachers.
• $25 provides 15 copies of A Guide to Safety to families and first responders.
• $100 provides the Kit for Kids peer education resource to an entire elementary or middle school.
• $150 provides 100 copies of a Life Journey through Autism guidebook sent to a community support group or military installation.
• $1,000 provides a research grant for a graduate student studying autism.
• $3,000 provides a scholarship for a student with autism to attend college.
• $30,000 fully underwrites an applied research pilot study
