We began suspecting that Jonah may be on the autism spectrum when he was around 18 months old. It took us almost another 12 months to receive a diagnosis. Since then, I've spent many hours researching therapies and finding out what options are available to us. We have been blessed to have (in my opinion) the best therapists and doctors to help Jonah and to help us understand what Jonah needs. For us, the diagnosis is not about having a "label", it's just the key that has opened the door to more resources that will allow Jonah to reach his full potential. He is an amazing little boy, sweet, loving, strong-willed and quick tempered, but also full of empathy for those around him. I could go on and on and still not capture the full picture of his beautiful personality. I know that Jonah is fearfully and wonderfully made, that God knew him before he was formed in my womb, and that God has good plans for him. Autism is just one part of the journey.
I discovered the Organization for Autism Research and I love that it's founded by parents to help each other navigate this sometimes scary, often confusing journey our family is on. The resources they develop are available to families free of charge. Resources like this were so helpful to us as we began this journey and we continue to look to these resources as we face new stages and transitions.
I'm raising money so that this organization can continue helping families just like us. Any contribution you make is greatly appreciated!
