2017 marks fully a decade I've been running marathons to raise research funds for the Organization For Autism Research (OAR). In the eight previous RunForAutism events, you fine folks have contributed a total of $104,435 in marathons from Miami to London to New York. My fund-raising highpoint was 2012 at the London Marathon where we brought in $21,279 for Autism Research. Hence my goal this year is to pass that by one dollar: $21,280.
This year am returning to my home-town Miami Marathon on January 28. This will be the last marathon before my odometer rolls over to 60-year-old three months later in May. Not sure how many more 26.2 milers I have in me (have done several dozen, not sure exactly how many, over the decades)....but plan have fun finding out as I move through the decade of my 60s.
Why have I spent the last ten years raising funds for OAR? Because I've seen first-hand the difference that research-based interventions can make in the lives of individuals with autism as they progress through their school years, into young adulthood, and into satisfying productive lives. And OAR has made major contributions to our understanding of what educational and therapeutic interventions are the most effective.
