Many of us have an unconscious bias against autism.. For me personally, it was simply a lack of understanding and empathy.
4 years ago, my beautiful son received the diagnosis of mild autism disorder spectrum (ads) and our world changed profoundly. We knew nothing about autism, behavioral characteristic and how we could help him develop the social/communication/motor skill to navigate the everyday situations of life that most of us take for granted.
What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects, among other things, the way an individual relates to his or her environment and their interaction with other people. The word 'spectrum' describes the range of difficulties that people on the autism spectrum may experience and the degree to which they may be affected. Some people may be able to live relatively normal lives, while others may have an accompanying learning challenges and require continued specialist support. The main areas of difficulty are in social communication, social interaction and restricted or repetitive behaviours and interests.
Through learning (scientific research, how we communicate etc.) and deeper sense of care to support (create inclusive education / employment environment etc.), I believe we can improve day-to-day quality of life for individuals with autism. Raising funds for Organization for Autism Research (OAR) helps them to fund research that helps provide additional insights towards caring and enhancing their quality of life.
Many people with autism go on to live independent and fulfilling lives, and that all deserve the opportunity to work productively, develop meaningful and fulfilling relationships and enjoy life. With (early) support and interventions and supports available, we can help them to by enjoy improved quality of life in all spheres of life.
