Tamara runs for autism

I am running with RUN FOR AUTISM on April 23, 2017 in the London Marathon. Aside from training over the next five months, I have decided to turn my early-morning workouts and long runs into something really meaningful. I am reaching out to help raise money for autism research.

1 in 4 people in the United States knows someone with autism. It is estimated that at least 1.7 million individuals in the U.S. are on the autism spectrum. The signs of autism become apparent by the time a child is three years old. This affects the way those with autism interact with their environment.

To be clear, autism isn’t a disease or an injury. I believe that neurological differences such as autism should be recognized and respected as any other human variation. I am not in support of finding a cure for autism. Rather, I would like to find a way for us to value the unique insights the autistic mind has to offer.

I support research on autism that is focused on: finding effective forms of augmentative and alternative communication for autistic people who don’t speak, on exploring what autism looks like through old age, as they move through adulthood, and on researching what accommodations, supports, and services can enable people to live the lives they want.

My son Nolan was diagnosed as being on the Autism spectrum at the age of 11. From ages 3 through 11, he struggled through school and everyday life because he was not properly supported. Upon entering 6th grade, Nolan, recommendation through his education team, was placed in the ASD Nest program at MS447 in Brooklyn, New York. The mission of the ASD Nest program is to create the best possible public school model for children with ASD and implement that model in all New York City neighborhoods. Because of the support provided by the ASD Nest program, Nolan was prepared for high school, both socially and academically. He is currently a junior at Harvest Collegiate High School in New York City and is a vibrant member of the school community; he is an honors student and was elected to serve on the SLT (School Leadership Team).

FUNDS NEEDED:

The goal is to raise at least $5000.  It is for a great cause, so I know that I can make it with your generosity and help.

EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS

I am dedicating this run to my son, Nolan, and autism research. All proceeds will go to the Organization for Autism Research, a national non-profit organization that funds research and offers resources for those affected by autism.

RISKS:

What would happen if we don't meet our financial goal in this campaign? Even if the final target of this campaign is not met, all raised funds will still be sent to OAR and a balance is paid by yours truly.

And now, we're hoping you will lend your support no matter how big or small. Together, with your help and our miles, we will provide research, education, and support for those affected by autism.
