On April 24, 2016 I will run the Virgin Money London Marathon. Running a race in another country is a bucket list item for me and in exchange for this opportunity I have agreed to fundraise for the Organization for Autism Research. T
What I appreciate about the Organization for Autism Research is their commitment to applied research. Applied research, unlike pharmaceutical research, addresses issues that impact the day-to-day lives of families, educators, caregivers and individuals affected by autism. They are the only organization with this exclusive focus. 1 in 110 children are born with autism which is a neurological disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact socially. There is no genetic marker for autism, it affects boys more than girls at a ratio of 4:1 and there is no cure. It is a lifelong challenge for the individuals diagnosed, and a life-changing challenge for their families. Research provides the hope and the promise of a better quality of life for those affected by autism.
All proceeds of my fundraising efforts will go to the Organization for Autism Research, a national non-profit organization. My goal (besides making it through the the 26.2 miles in one piece) is to raise $5000 by April 10, 2016. While running this marathon, I know that each mile will symbolize another step on the road to a better quality of life for those affected with autism. With your help, I will raise the money needed to fund the essential research and invaluable resources. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. Some ideas for how much to give include:
*$26.2 for each mile I will run or (because it is in the U.K.) $42 for every kilometer.
*$90 for the $90 billion estimated cost for autism care in the U.S.
*$110 for 1 in 110 children that will be diagnosed with autism this year.
*$320 for the estimated lifetime cost of $3.2 million to care for an individual with autism.
*$1000 or more because you know and love someone with autism or know a member of their family.Your donation is tax deductible and you will receive a thank-you note from OAR that you may use as a receipt for tax purposes. Donations can be made online!
